Classic Books to Read Aloud

Not all classic books have aged well but here is a list of classic books that still make a great read aloud with your family.

Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White

This is perfect for all ages with even my 4-year-old enjoying the story of Fern, Wilbur, and Charlotte. This book does talk about animal death on the farm in a way that helps kids understand while seeing a wonderful legacy left behind. If you are just starting out doing family read aloud time, highly recommend this one as your first.

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

This book is one of my favorite classic stories. The story of Anne as she comes to live with Matthew and Marilla is one not to be passed over. This story touches on friendships, trying to fit/belong, and great imagination.

The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann Wyss

Follow the Robinson family as they are shipwrecked on an island for more than 10 years. This story shows the power of family and faith who knew they could survive as long as they were together. Don’t forget to explore the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse at Disneyland that brings this story to life.

Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren

I honestly wouldn’t know about this book if I hadn’t seen the show as a kid. The theme song from this show lives rent free in my mind. My kids were fascinated by Pippi’s superhuman strength and unconventional lifestyle. She doesn’t go to school and lives by herself so she can get up to mischief. In the end, she has a big heart and finds joy in being herself.

Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl

This Roald Dahl book is the shortest of my classic read aloud with less than 100 pages. Follow Mr. Fox as he tries to escape farmers: Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. You will be cheering on the animals while also wondering how Mr. Fox gets out of his predicament.

The Secret Garden by Fances Hodgson Burnett

My sister and I read this book when we were younger, and I was fascinated by this story. This magical garden Mary discovers at her uncle’s house will reinforce your love of nature. You follow Mary, Colin, and Dickon as they learn and grow to be better people through this garden project.

The Lion the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis

Any great read aloud list should always include The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. This story stands the test of time and is still a top choice to read in elementary schools. This adventure story of siblings Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy will keep your family on the edge of their seats. If you have older kids, I highly recommend watching the movie after finishing the book.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl

Is there anything more fun than imagining yourself inside a chocolate factory? While I view Grandpa Joe to be a true book villain, this story is not to be missed. Charlie finds a golden ticket and gets a tour of the most famous chocolate factory of the world along with 4 other children. Your family will love to hear what these spoiled children do during this tour.

Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

I recommend this one for kids ages 10 years old and up. This story of Jim Hawkins and his crew as they find a treasure map marking where Captain Flint buried his pirate treasure. The pirates do have to fight when encounter mutineers. This story influenced how pirates are depicted in our culture (parrots, missing legs, etc)
