Whether you are traveling to San Francisco, live close by, or studying the history of this city-check out these books to read. This city and the Golden Gate bridge has been an icon for the Bay Area. If you have never been to San Francisco, I highly recommend seeing the sights. The Golden Gate bridge is a personal favorite and living close by I never get bored of seeing it or driving over it.

Larry and his family are on a road trip to San Francisco. One minute his family is there and the next, Larry is all by himself. Don’t worry, Larry has a great time seeing all the sights and is reunited. This picture book, is a great way to recognize famous sights after your trip to SF has ended.

Alcatraz (aka The Rock) is an interesting landmark of San Francisco. This non-fiction picture book is a great story about Elliot Michener who was an inmate there. Learn how gardening when on a giant rock, transformed his life.

One of the most famous inmates at Alcatraz was Al Capone. This historical fiction book doesn’t have much about Capone but follows Moose Flanagan. His Dad works at Alcatraz, so his family moves there. This chapter book I would recommend for ages 10+. There are 4 books in this series.

Leo is a ten-year-old paperboy in San Francisco when the great earthquake happened. Learn details about the earthquake and how Leo survived in the city afterwards. This is a well-loved series by my kids and highly recommend for ages 8-10 years old.

This is a classic picture book highlighting the history of San Francisco and some of its most iconic sights and cable cars. This book would be a perfect read before visiting the city to get more background history of the city.

This non-fiction picture book will give you great information about how the Golden Gate Bridge was constructed. The story is told from the point of view of the lighthouse keeper’s children who watch it being built. If you do want to see the bridge up close, you can park on the San Francisco side and walk along. Fort Point is also right below the bridge for an up-close encounter with this amazing iconic bridge.

Did you know that the fog in San Francisco is named Karl? Yes it’s true! This is a silly book made for coffee tables and photographers. The introduction is written by Karl about the history of his fog family. If you are looking to see San Francisco without Karl around, winter is best time. You will find Karl hangs around the bridge all day in the summer blocking the view.

Follow two babies and their families as they visit San Francisco. The rhyming and full illustrations makes it a cute book to read with little ones. You can find other cities written by Ward Jenkins to remember your vacation by.

City Spies Golden Gate is the second book in this middle grade series by James Ponti. A group of young international kids become spies to solve mysteries all over the world. This time they are in San Francisco investigating a spy who died at the Botanical Gardens. I loved all the references to San Francisco sights. Highly recommend this series for ages 9-12 years old (but I also personally love this series too).
