Valentine’s Books

Valentine’s Books

There are lots of Valentine’s books about love, but this list is our favorite ones. You will find sweet stories for kids who love this holiday and silly stories for kids who think love is gross.

Heartfelt by Elaine Vickers and Samantha Cotterill

Making hearts of all shapes and sizes is fun but giving them away in the best part. With hearts of all sizes and colors, this child can’t wait to show love to others by passing out hearts to others. Using all senses, love is everywhere and looks different to each person, but love is everywhere.

How to Help a Cupid by Sue Fliess and Simona Sanfilippo

On Valentine’s Day people celebrate by exchanging valentines but on this day, kids find Cupid needing help. Cupid’s arrows all broke so the kids come together to fix the arrows and show him how to make a card. Once Cupid is off with his arrows, your readers will find out more information on the history of Cupid and Valentine’s Day.

Valensteins by Ethan Long

Vladmir and his Halloween friends are back in the treehouse but this time, Fran is making a heart for Valentine’s Day. This silly story of his friends being grossed out by love and finding out what a heart looks like will have your readers laughing. Don’t worry, Fran breaks away from the group to give his Valentine the heart he made.

I Love You Already! by Jory John and Benji Davies

Bear loves lazy weekend mornings, but Duck is always looking for way to spend time with his buddy Bear. Duck gets Bear to take a walk and admits that he is worried Bear doesn’t like him. Bear reassures him that he loves Duck like a brother even if he does want to be alone sometimes.

Grumpy Monkey by Valentine Gross-Out by Suzanne Lang and Max Lang

Jim is grossed out by all the animal’s giving gifts, cards, snuggling, and worst of all kissing-yuck! Jim goes to check on his friend Norman so they can be grossed out by Valentine’s Day together, but Norman isn’t. Norman helps Jim realize that love can be what parent’s feel for their kids or love for your friends. This is my son’s favorite Valentine’s Day book, who is grossed out by all the love stuff so don’t miss out on this fun one.

Cupig: The Valentine’s Day Pig by Claire Tattersfield and Rob Sayegh Jr.

Cupig is off spreading love on Valentine’s Day when a storm comes through and causing her aim to be off. Now instead of PB&J, Anchovies and Peanut Butter fell in love. Instead of Salt and Pepper, it’s Salt and Trash Can. These silly pairings and puns make this a fun read aloud for all ages.

Viking in Love by Doug Cenko

Stig was a Viking who loves kittens but not the sea. One day he sees Ingrid in the sea and can’t stop thinking about her so writes her a letter. The only problem is that he is scared to be in the sea so not sure how to send it to her boat. Through determination, Stig braves the sea and is saved by Ingrid who also loves kittens.

The Day it Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond

This oldie but goodie story is a classic read this time of year. Cornelia Augusta collects all the hearts raining down from the sky. She ends up making cards and other crafts using these hearts to mail to her friends. It never rains hearts after this, but it doesn’t stop Cornelia Augusta from making more each year.

The Little Puppy by Nicola Killen

Ollie is playing with Grandma’s puppy, Milo for the day. She can’t wait to make a drawing for Grandma, but Milo ends up chewing the paper up. Ollie goes for walk to calm down. Milo follows her and they end up having lots of fun playing together in the woods. When Milo and Ollie return home, there is enough time to make a new heart drawing for Grandma and Milo. This story isn’t about Valentine’s Day, but the red heart drawings and story of love make it on my reading this for February.

A Crankenstein Valentine by Samanta Berger and Dan Santat

Crankenstein wants nothing to do with Valentine’s Day. He ends up making his own snarky valentines for his classmates. The only that does cheer him up is having a friend who doesn’t like Valentine’s Day either. This quick read is fun for those kids who aren’t into wearing hearts or making cute Valentine crafts.

Turkey’s Valentine Surprise by Wendi Silvano

It’s Valentine’s Day and Turkey is excited to pass out valentines to his animal friends on the farm. He gets a great idea to sign them ‘Secret Admirer’ but his is disappointed when the animals all know it’s him. Don’t miss the ending to see what kind gesture he thinks up at the barn. If you love this series and seeing Turkey’s costumes, then you will love this one. It is a top read this time of year for my kids.
